Are you saying NO to plastic bags?
Are you saying NO to all plastic bags yet? In a recent research project in the UK, ‘supermarket style’ bags made from polyethylene were tested alongside biodegradable and compostable bags to examine how they were broken down by the natural environment and the results may surprise you!
The study was carried out by the University of Plymouth over a 3 year period. The three types of plastic bags were buried in soil, submersed in the sea and left in the open air. The results for the biodegradable bags showed that they had not deteriorated as much as expected. The results for compostable bags showed in a marine environment they had broken down within 3 months, were in advanced stages after 9 months in open air and surprisingly in advanced stages after 2.3 years in soil!
Considering that most bags end up in land fill, if you want to do the right thing for our environment, just say NO to any type of plastic bag. But if you do have to use one for your garbage bin or doggy do-do, we recommend compostable bags only as they eventually break down in the environment. (Check out Biobags).
But it’s not all bad news! Since the major supermarkets have banned free single use plastic bags in July 2018, over 1.5 billion bags have been eliminated from use AND overall bag consumption has dropped by over 80%.
The best type of bags are those that you can use again and again. The Mojo’s Health and Wholefoods team LOVE the organic compostable cotton bags from Estring Bags.
